Early Beginnings (1887-1900s)

  • Early 1887: A group of young men approach Rama Varma XV, Maharajah of Cochin, requesting a space for recreation.
  • June 3, 1897: Rama Varma Union Club (later Rama Varma Club) founded at Durbar Hall ground, Kochi.
  • 1897: Justice Narayana Marar elected as first president.
  • Early 1900s: Members were primarily lawyers and government employees.
  • Main activities: Billiards, tennis, cards, socializing.

Growth and Development (1914-1970s)

  • 1914: Ernakulam Town Cooperative Bank starts operating from the Club with Rs. 1,000 fixed deposit.
  • Early 1950s: Bank relocates, membership fee is 4 annas.
  • 1970: Major renovation under S. Krishnakumar, IAS, Ernakulam District Collector and Club President.
  • Renovation:
    • Previous structure was demolished and replaced with the current building.
    • Increased number of facilities, rooms, and banquet halls.

Centenary Year: Modernization and Expansion (1990s-Present)

  • Late 1990s: Significant changes for Club’s centenary under Presidentship Dr. P. Ramakrishnan.  Centenary Hall was built for conducting weddings and large gatherings.
  • Centenary year additions:
    • Three small halls
    • Air-conditioned billiards room
    • Sports complex with badminton, table tennis
    • Modern restaurant
    • Fitness Centre
    • Air-conditioned rooms and suites

The last 25 years: Various amenities, including tennis, snooker, badminton, fitness center, banquet halls, and restaurant were renovated under various leaders such as Dr. Ajay Kumar, Advocate N. Haridas, Suresh R, Bindu Madhav, and Praveen Menon.  

Present: Post pandemic revival under the Presidentship of Shri. Bindu Madhav, and Secretary, Ashok Kumar S.  Rooms, Front Office, Corridors, Washrooms, Bar, Tennis Court, Gym were renovated.  An ITF certified Coach was appointed to run the Tennis Coaching Academy.
